Marble floors, oak banisters, concrete arches, and cast-iron railings. Hanging in the hall is a chandelier that once hung in one of Gustave Eiffel’s villas in Geneva. None of these materials are replicas. They were salvaged from buildings that no longer exist and reused here.

The architect behind this country house
Marcel Raymaekers, now ninety, spent his entire career building with materials others threw away. He systematically collected materials from demolished buildings and gave them a second life, long before anyone even used the word “circular.” This country house on Oude Truierbaan is one of his designs in which that collecting is most clearly visible.
The Flemish Architecture Institute recognizes his work. Later this year, a book will be published and an exhibition will open at deSingel in Antwerp.
